Gartner defines a data science and machine learning (DSML) platform as a core product and supporting portfolio of coherently integrated products, components, libraries and frameworks (including proprietary, partner-sourced and open-source). Its primary users are data science professionals, including expert data scientists, citizen data scientists, data engineers, application developers and machine learning (ML) specialists. In this year’s magic quadrant assessment, new entrants include: Alibaba Cloud, Amazon Web Services, Cloudera, and Samsung Data Systems (SDS). With the entry of Amazon Web Services, this is the first time the machine learning platforms from the major public cloud vendors and the on-premise vendors have participated. Despite their investments and the number of machine learning offerings from the major public cloud vendors, they (Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Google) have all been categorized as Visionaries, while the offerings from the Leaders are largely based an on-premise or hybrid installations.

From the latest Dell Technologies Digital Transformation Index survey, many Canadian customers have prioritized multi-cloud initiatives as one of their top three technology investments going forward for the next 1–3 years.
